He Named Me Malala, Free Public Screening

Join us at the Empire Arts Center for a free public viewing of the critically-acclaimed documentary, He Named Me Malala, sponsored by UND’s Honors Program. This film tells the story of Malala Yousafzai, a young woman who stood up to the Taliban in support of girls’ education and was subsequently shot in the head. An optional panel discussion will follow the film to provide viewers an opportunity to present questions/comments to community experts regarding the social issues presented in the film (gender inequality, girls’ education, human rights, etc.). Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, Free Public Screening

Join us at the Empire Arts Center for a free public viewing of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013), which celebrates Nelson Mandela’s extraordinary journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his election as President of South Africa. It explores the Mandela unknown to most of the world – the lover of fancy cars, a ladies’ man, the boxing enthusiast and playboy, the skillful lawyer and freedom fighter.  The film is an intimate portrait of the making of a modern icon.

As part of the 48th Annual UND Writers Conference, NoViolet Bulawayo will be reading from her work at 8 pm on Thursday, March 23rd. Her reading will be followed by a book signing, as well as a reception at the North Dakota Museum of Art.  Ms. Bulawayo will also participate in other Conference events, the complete schedule of which can be found here. All UND Writers Conference events are free and open to the public. Free parking is also available.
